Stock Market News and Investment Information RSS (Adds analyst, updates shares) PARIS, March 24 (Reuters) - Sanofi-Aventis (SASY.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) has won backing for the use of its Taxotere treatment in advanced stomach cancer from a European Union health panel, the world's third largest drugmaker said on Friday.

Taxotere was Sanofi's third best-selling drug last year, after blood thinners Plavix and Lovenox, with 1.609 billion euros ($1.93 billion) in sales and its wider use could secure sales growth amid rivalry from generic and branded cancer drugs.

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use gave a positive opinion on Taxotere - already used to fight several other cancers - in the new line of treatment.
