By Kerry Dooley Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) - Eli Lilly & Co. had a fourth-quarter loss on taxes to return $8 billion in profits to the U.S. from abroad. Sales rose 5 percent, boosted by the attention-deficit drug Strattera and the cancer treatment Gemzar. The net loss of $2.4 million, Lilly's first in seven years, was less than a cent a share and compared with net income of $747.2 million, or 69 cents, a year earlier. The recent quarter included $465 million in tax costs on overseas profits being brought to the U.S. under a one-year tax holiday, the Indianapolis-based company said in a statement today.
