In the comparable quarter last year, Lilly earned $755.2 million, or 69 cents a share.

Sales rose 10% from a year ago to $3.60 billion.

On average, analysts had been forecasting earnings of 71 cents a share in the latest quarter on sales of $3.62 billion.

For the fourth quarter, Lilly put earnings at 73 cents to 79 cents a share, compared with the Thomson First Call consensus estimate of 76 cents a share.

Among its big sellers, Lilly said third-quarter revenue for schizophrenia treatment Zyprexa rose 1% from a year ago to $1.04 billion, while sales in its diabetes category rose 13% to $652...

said third-quarter profit rose 5.2 percent as increased sales of its Cymbalta antidepressant and Alimtra cancer drug helped counter sluggish growth of its best-seller Zyprexa schizophrenia drug.

Net income for Lilly rose to $794.4 million, or 73 cents a share, from $755 million, or 69 cents, a year earlier, Indianapolis-based Lilly said in a statement issued on PR news wire.

Sales rose 10 percent to $3.6 billion.

Lilly is planning on saving $150 million this year through costs cuts, including job reductions announced in 2004, according to the company Web site.
