Up to 10 drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme could follow Imigran fast-disintegrating tablets, which have been withdrawn from the Australian market by manufacturer GSK.

Experts recommended Imigran FDT be added to the PBS in March this year.

The Australian Medical Association has demanded urgent talks with the Government after the Health Minister, Tony Abbott, this week disclosed that patients may have to pay extra for four brands of prescribed drugs.

Medical leaders yesterday challenged government claims that cheaper alternative drugs had equivalent results to the original brands.

The originals will attract higher prices on top of the existing patient contributions.

The co-payment is $28.60, but $4.60 for concession card holders.

Four pharmaceutical companies have refused to accept lower prices for the drugs as demanded by the Health Department.

Mr Abbott has said the cost difference will become a "special patient contribution" payable by the patient unless the doctor declares there is no clinical alternative.
