on Thursday reported a better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit due largely to a lower tax rate, and reaffirmed 2006 earnings would rise 8 percent to 11 percent, in line with Wall Street estimates.

The Indianapolis-based drugmaker earned $701 million, or 64 cents per share.

It reported a loss in the year-ago quarter of $2.4 million, or nil per share, after charges for restructuring and taxes on repatriated earnings.

Excluding special items, Lilly (LLY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) earned 80 cents per share.

A 1 percent decline in the company's tax rate helped it beat the average forecast of 78 cents per share among analyst...

(NYSE:LLY) is reporting a fourth quarter profit of $700.6 million, or $0.64 per share, compared to a loss for the same period the previous year.

The company says 2005 earnings also increased to $1.980 billion, or $1.81 per share.
